The excursion kicks off at 7:00 am from our designated meeting point in the San Blas district. From this location, we embark on a journey of approximately 2.5 hours, traveling along the Avenue of the Volcanoes. This route provides breathtaking views of the Andes Mountains and serves as a gateway to a variety of natural wonders, ultimately leading us to Cotopaxi National Park.
Upon arrival at the park, you'll have the opportunity to purchase local handicrafts crafted by indigenous artisans, such as ponchos and sweaters, perfect for combating the intense chill of the volcano. As we make our way to the volcano, we'll take strategic breaks to acclimatize to the high-altitude temperatures. Our journey will lead us to a parking area, from which we will hike to a refuge where a warm breakfast awaits us, offering a chance to rest and recharge.
Following breakfast, we will embark on a two-hour hike reaching an altitude of 5,000 meters to witness the glacier at the base of Cotopaxi, Ecuador’s second tallest volcano. During this trek, our guides will provide insights into the significance of this volcano, detailing its most recent eruption, as well as its diverse fauna and flora.
We will then return to the refuge to enjoy a box lunch and receive a briefing on our upcoming bike descent. Afterward, we will commence the exhilarating two-hour descent by bike, culminating at the Limpiopungo lagoon. Here, our guide will lead us on a scenic walk around the lagoon.
Subsequently, we will explore the museum and interpretation center, where we can admire the Andean flora, engage in bird watching, and take in the stunning scenery. Our adventure will conclude as we head back to Quito, with an expected arrival time of around 4:00 pm.
