Our journey commences in Puerto López, where we board our boat; from June to October, we have the opportunity to witness the majestic humpback whales during our voyage.

Upon reaching our first dive location, we will be equipped for our initial dive, and then we’ll be all set! Let's dive into our first underwater adventure!

Following this, we'll take a brief pause before preparing for our second, exhilarating dive in the vibrant waters off the Ecuadorian Coast!

After completing the activities, we will enjoy a box lunch before heading back to Puerto.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Isla de la Plata diving tour typically includes boat transportation from Puerto López, full scuba diving equipment, certified guides, a snack or lunch on board, and drinks. It also covers humpback whale watching during the season (June to September), as well as visits to the island's highlights, allowing you to explore its biodiversity and underwater reefs. Always check with the tour operator to confirm the included services and be sure to receive a safety briefing before diving.

To participate in a diving tour to Isla de la Plata, you usually need at least a basic Open Water Diver certification (PADI, SSI, or another internationally recognized certification). However, some tours offer beginner diving options under the supervision of certified instructors, including a Discover Scuba Diving experience or mini-course. It's advisable to check with the agency for specific requirements and communicate your experience level, as the safety and enjoyment of the trip depend on meeting these standards.

The best time to book a diving and whale watching excursion to Isla de la Plata is between June and September, when humpback whales migrate to the coast of Ecuador. During these months, weather conditions are favorable, sightings are almost guaranteed, and the underwater world boasts incredible biodiversity. The rest of the year is also ideal for recreational diving thanks to the water visibility and abundance of marine life, although whale sightings are not possible.

To fully enjoy your snorkeling and whale watching excursion to Isla de la Plata, we recommend bringing lightweight, quick-drying clothing, a swimsuit, biodegradable sunscreen, a hat or cap, sunglasses, a towel, a change of dry clothes, and an underwater camera if you have one. Don't forget your personal documents and wear appropriate footwear for the boat. If you have your own snorkeling equipment, you can ask the agency if you can bring it. Stay hydrated and always follow the tour guide's instructions.

During the excursion to Isla de la Plata, you can observe, in addition to the famous humpback whales during the season, a wide variety of marine life: sea turtles, manta rays, reef fish, moray eels, pufferfish, and occasionally reef sharks. Blue-footed boobies, frigatebirds, and land tortoises are common sights on the surface and while hiking around the island. These experiences offer close contact with the marine and terrestrial biodiversity of the national park, which is why the island is known as 'the poor man's Galapagos'.
